To Hear The Word And Forget To Act Is To Plow The Field And Forget To Plant

“But be doers of the Word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the Word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was.”

James 1:22 (NKJV)

JANUARY 13 - “Didn’t he just preach the same thing last week?” the perfectly manicured wife whispered agitatedly into her husband’s right ear. Having listened half-heartedly, the man shifted in his seat, tipping his head forward, fervently trying to recall. In a few seconds, his wife leaned over again, “Did that ignorant woman at the end of our row step on your foot like she did mine, fumbling around trying to find a seat?”

Slowly nodding, the smiling husband finally remembered—it was as clear as a church bell. “Hey, I remember what he talked about last week—love. Last week, like today, he preached about loving one another.” Squirming around uneasily the wife bristled, Why did I even ask? Week after week we continually hear the Word of God, but do you realize we are to be doers of the Word, and not hearers only? I find it interesting how two people can hear the same message, but one benefits and the other does not. The prophet Isaiah tells us, “The Word of God does not return void.” This means that there is no inherent defect in the seed of the Word of God. Nevertheless, Jesus tells us in Mark 4:17-19 why the Word of God can be void in a person’s life—as a result of the condition of the soil.

In Hebrews 4 we see that the Word does not profit us because we do not mix what we hear with faith and action. God’s Word only transforms us in accordance with our commitment to hear and do what He speaks.
