AUGUST 10 - When we observe the lives of Adam, Moses, David, Samson, Judas, and even Lucifer, we see that Scripture continually exemplifies this principle. Still, there are many people who truly believe God is a God of the second chance. The Scripture, however, does not support this teaching. God is a God of fresh starts, but never will we regain the same position as the day we disobeyed God. If one were to fail a class, he would not start where he failed; he would have to repeat the entire class. Although he had a fresh start, he could not regain the position he once held in that class, nor could he recoup his time.

Let’s take a closer look at Moses. God told him to speak to the rock, but Moses decided he was going to disobey God. Out of frustration, instead of speaking to the rock, he struck it with all his might. Then notice what God said, “Because you did not believe Me, to hallow Me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them.” God did not allow Moses to enter the Promised Land because of his disobedience. Just one act of disobedience kept Moses from enjoying the pleasures of Canaan.

We must clearly understand—God is serious about our obedience; life is not merely a game to Him. He can only reward the obedient. He desires for all of us to possess the Promised Land, but only those who choose the avenue of obedience enjoy the fruit of Canaan.

Father, I thank You that I am willing and obedient, therefore, I eat the best of the land. My obedience proves my trust in You and I choose to obey Your instruction.

AUGUST 8 -His thoughts resting upon God as his feet sunk into the desert sand, John’s garment scratched against his weathered skin, Heaven’s voice echoing louder than all the wild animals in the barren wilderness
combined. Realizing that change was apparent, that his long years alone were about to end, he was willing for God’s change, prepared to become the vessel through which the Holy Spirit could perform His vital work. Instead of always wanting our circumstances or the people around us to change, we must be willing for God to change us on a daily basis. Only then can we become the kinds of vessels through which the Holy Spirit can help others.

It is God’s plan for us to continually be in a state of transformation as we become increasingly more like Jesus. Unfortunately, the vast majority of Christians refuses to change. We want our circumstances
to change but we do not want to change. In fact, statistics show that in America, more than ninety-three percent of the population refuses to change.

We must be willing to change if we want to excel and win in this life. We must embrace change every day, as did John the Baptist, so we can be significant in the lives of those we serve and in the heart and mind of God as He leads us into the fullness of what He plans for us. Take a moment and ask yourself this question: What single change have I avoided and postponed for a later time?

Father, I thank You that with an unveiled face, I behold Your glory as in a mirror. I am transformed into the same image from glory to glory by Your Spirit.

AUGUST 7 - The way you treat a relationship when it no longer saves your life, pays your bills, or soothes your broken heart candidly reveals the motive you had for it, right from the very start. It is impossible to
escape your motives once you establish them as the direction for your life. With pure motive of heart, John the Baptist “made way for the Christ” since Jesus’ baptism by John was a starting point for apostolic preaching and the new, exhilarating era of salvation.

John’s meekness in his attitude toward Christ, making way and standing aside as the Son of God commenced His ministry, revealed the true motive of his character—humility, selflessness, and sacrificial purity.

Carefully examine your motives before entering any relationship, but especially a relationship with an authority figure. If there is even a shred of selfishness in your heart, any thought of “What’s in it for me?” you would be wise to stop pursing that relationship until you purify your motives. Otherwise, you’ll run into a dead end and be at a regretful loss to appropriately recover.

Father, I thank You that I understand that whatever I sow is what I reap. I choose to sow the right seeds today that will produce the future You desire for my life. I won’t grow weary in well doing, for I know that in due time I will reap a harvest if I do not faint.

AUGUST 6 - Like a careless match setting a house wildly aflame, ultimately rendering it into nothing but a useless pile of rubble, it is only a matter of time before we see those who have yet to commit their life to God cry out for help. Although they may have all the worldly possessions one could want, in reality, their life is little more than a brittle heap of scorched ash.

God always begins His strategic work on the inside before He ever manifests the final product on the outside. True progress is when one commits his or her life and plans to the Lord, allowing Him to exclusively lead. And as soon as you commit your work to the Lord, somehow through Him, your plans begin to favorably succeed.

Choose today to give God not part, but your entire life. He deserves it, doesn’t He? God desires to make you great; all He requests is your heartfelt compliance! John the Baptist said (and we must do the same), “I must decrease and He must increase.” That means the more we pursue God, the less we desire the pleasurable
things this world offers, thereby allowing the progression of His will to be accomplished.

Father, I choose to decrease so Jesus may increase in my life.

AUGUST 5 - Two months had miserably passed since the shock of his death. Awakened by the gunshots, five quick blasts, upon opening her back door, there he was, her husband of twenty years, lying on the cold
driveway, a mess of blood and flesh emulating from what had been his head. “I want to get out but I can’t,” she had heard him whisper into the telephone a few days before his death. Somehow, some way, he got
in with the wrong crowd. Now, although the holes from the bullets that hit the garage were being filled in and repaired, the consequences of his actions would remain.

Radically condemning the Jewish “establishment” of that day, John the Baptist called Israel into a “new beginning,” a baptism of repentance from years of stubborn sin. And although scores were baptized,
cleansing their lives of wrongdoing, the consequences remained. It is essential to realize that living the life God intended begins by recognizing there are consequences for our actions, just as there were consequences for the man who got involved with the wrong crowd. Of course, we live in a society today where consequences for a lack of self-control are few and far between.

But we need to realize that even though society hands out very few consequences for wrong behavior, there are great consequences in the Kingdom of God, and those consequences don’t go away with the wind.

Father, I thank You that I am willing and obedient and I eat the best of the land.

AUGUST 4 - Following His baptism, Jesus was led to the wilderness where His spirit and flesh were allowed to be tested by the enemy. Have you realized that the spirit and flesh are in constant contention, much like the relentless conflict between the Arabs and the Jews? Neither is willing to compromise; there is no middle ground. The difficulty we face is that for all the years before we came to Christ, our flesh was the only voice that directed our lives. When we came to Christ, our old sinful selves were crucified, and we were given a new mandate: to walk in the spirit, and in doing so, to starve the lusts of the flesh. Any effort we make to draw near to God sounds an alarm in the fortress of our flesh. To illustrate, slowly read the following  sentence aloud: “I am going to fast for the next three days.” Now, the moment you said that, what thoughts crossed your mind? Were they thoughts of experiencing God’s presence to a new fullness, or thoughts of panic and hunger?

Both the spirit and the flesh have a distinct voice. We need to strengthen our spirit so that its voice  reverberates in our hearts with the blast of a trumpet, and so that our flesh can hardly utter a peep.  Remember the adage, the dog that wins the fight is the one that is fed the most. Walking with God is not an emotional or surreal concept. It is very real and very normal. Intimacy with God is not super-spirituality. Rather, it is a confident assurance that we live in accordance with God’s commands, that our will (just as that of the Lord Jesus Christ) is totally submitted to His.

Father, I thank You that I walk in the Spirit and let the Lord Jesus Christ control my life, and I do not fulfill the lusts of the flesh.

AUGUST 3 - Any farmer knows that it is foolish to expect a harvest from seed he never sows. In all of life, there is no such thing as a harvest that did not first begin as a seed. There are many today in the body of Christ who continually beg God for a harvest, although there was never a time when they ever sowed a seed. Though diverse in appearance and habits, John and Jesus were of the same family, the same seed, planning the same harvest. And it is interesting to note that as John’s fundamental ministry was to prepare Israel for Jesus’ ministry, so must we prepare for the harvest God so intricately planned. Never complain to Heaven about a harvest from a seed you have never sown. In fact, even those who sow never need to approach God about their harvest. The law of sowing and reaping is intact. If you sow, you will reap. You don’t need to spend many hours in prayer for a harvest.

• Just sow the seed
• Wait in faith
• And expect that the harvest will come

Soon, you will find it coming to the shoreline of your life, sailing upon every wave.

Father, I thank You that I understand that whatever I sow is what I reap. I choose to sow the right seeds today that will produce the future You desire for my life. I won’t grow weary in well doing, for I know that in due time I will reap a harvest if I do not faint.

AUGUST 2 - As Roman flags fluttered in the warm breezes of Palestine, restlessness indignantly characterized the land, oozing like olive oil from a fractured lamp. An unpleasant reminder that Israel was not yet free, faint whispers of a King, a Liberator, the long-awaited Messiah, rode on the coattails of those breezes: hopeful, ready, uncertain. And as John began sowing the seed, baptizing in the River Jordan, Jesus and Heaven prepared to reap the harvest. The law of sowing and reaping persistently governs your entire life, whether or not you realize it! As with any law, you can either work it to your advantage, or experience the consequences it may bring. God gave each of us a method to create the future He called us to live; He does not just give us what we want because we ask for it. Your seed of today creates your harvest of tomorrow, therefore:

• What kind of relationships do you desire to attain?
• What kind of life would you like to live?
• How much money would you like to acquire?

God tells us, “Whatever a man sows that shall he reap.” So often we erroneously believe that God is going to make our relationships work, give us a fantastic life, and shower finances on us like a steady drizzle in the middle of spring. But if we are honest with ourselves, we know this is not the case in our personal life. God told Joshua, “You will make your way prosperous and you will have good success if you meditate, speak, and act on My Word.” What you sow you certainly reap. We must always remember, however, we can never harvest from a seed never sown. Choose to sow your life today!

Father, I thank You that I sow bountifully and therefore I reap bountifully.

AUGUST 1 - “Why Mom? Why Mom? Why Mom?” Even preschool children are on a quest for wisdom, and for many years, my passion was to know what God thought and said about any given subject. Now, I want to know why God said what He said. I have come to understand that wisdom is what God said…understanding is why God said it. If we as believers can understand why God said something, we will have no trouble doing what He plainly instructed us to do.

I must make this clear: You cannot begin to pursue understanding until you first choose wisdom. One must willingly do what He said before one can qualify to ask God what He meant by His statement. You see this mistake in many young people as they are trained in the way they should go. Their father may say, “Son, I want you to take out the trash right now.” The son may respond, “Why now? Can’t I do it later?” At times, the body of Christ acts the same way. I truly believe that God will not grant me understanding until I first obey His Word with unquestioned compliance.

We must first choose wisdom, and then passionately pursue understanding if we desire to mature into the likeness of Christ Jesus.

Father, I thank You that I choose wisdom as it is the principal thing. Though it cost all I have, I passionately pursue understanding.
