Offense Is Never Allowed To Enter Into The Life Of A Servant

“Then David stood at the mouth of the cave and called to Saul, ‘My master! My king!’ Saul looked back. David fell to his knees and bowed in reverence. He called out, ‘Why do you listen to those who say ‘David is out to get you’? This very day with your very own eyes you have seen that just now in the cave God put you in my hands. My men wanted me to kill you, but I wouldn’t do it. I told them that I won’t lift a finger against my master—he’s God’s anointed.’”
1 Samuel 24:8-10 (MESSAGE)

MARCH 19 - What could possibly be a greater reason to get offended than being hunted by the one you are trying to serve? David gave his life for the king’s service—he served faithfully in the army and loyally in the
palace. In everything he did, his heart was toward Saul, and for Saul’s prosperous reign. Never did he see himself as the one who should be king in Saul’s place, though he knew very well that such would be the case one day. He entrusted himself to the hand of God, who always judges justly, and who sets kings on thrones or removes them from power.

While in the wilderness, the Jews were in constant offense. Sometimes it was Moses. Sometimes it was their environment. And most often it was God. They literally breathed an atmosphere of wretched offense.

Do you or I have any reason to get offended in light of what David endured? Have we left our family and all our desires for another’s sake? And have we, in turn, been hunted for our death? Of course not! What kept David from being offended with Saul? It was his purity of heart—he wanted what was best for the king, not what he could get from the king. If we develop that heart toward the people around us, especially our superiors, we won’t have further bouts with offense.

Forgiveness Is The Perfume That The Broken Heart Casts Back Upon The Foot That Crushed It

“You must make allowance for each other’s faults and forgive the person who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others.”
Colossians 3:13 (NLT)

MARCH 11 - The bitter herb found on the Seder plate, usually foul-smelling horseradish, helps Jews around the world deal with the remembrance of the bitter things that happened before and during their flight from Egypt. One of the most effective weapons hell possesses is bitterness. God gave us the mighty weapon of forgiveness to combat bitterness. Bitterness wipes the smile from the heart and siphons passion from someone who desires to serve God and love His people. It paralyzes the gifts and abilities God placed within us.

In order to experience true happiness, we must overcome any offense that Satan brings our way. People will utter unkind words concerning us, hurt us, and even betray us. Yet, we must respond in faith and forgive anyone who wrongs us. Through forgiveness, we defeat the spirit of bitterness, conquering it once and for all.

Understanding how much Jesus forgave us is crucial when it comes to us forgiving others. We cannot afford to harbor offense within our hearts. Unforgiveness leads to sickness and disease within our bodies. We must be quick to follow the words of the apostle Paul, “Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamor, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: and be kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you” (Ephesians 4:31-32). By following this instruction to forgive, we can walk free from bitterness (and its foul smell) and live tenderhearted, peaceable lives.
