A Man’s Character Is Crowned The Moment He Embraces His “Duty” To Obey

“No, O people, the Lord has already told you what is good, and this is what He requires: to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.”
Micah 6:8 (NLT)

JULY 9 - On many occasions, it was young Jesus who performed the duty of reading the Scriptures on the Sabbath day. His Godly character was expressed by His great desire for the Word of God, making it His custom, when His peers might have been out doing other things. Godly character always expresses itself in conduct, inspired and guided by principle, integrity, and wisdom. The Christian life is something we are called to undertake, not because of a requirement, but because we willingly accept the invitation to give up our lives, desires, and opinions for those of Jesus Christ.

The word “duty” brings a sour face to many who hear it. Nevertheless, the moment we give our lives to Christ, we step under his umbrella of Lordship, cheerfully accepting our mission and its instructions. The crown of a man’s character is granted the moment he accepts his call to duty. We must choose our steps carefully and pursue God’s Word fervently, esteeming the duty of obedience above the relationships and opinions of others.

As we embrace the authority of God and of those under whose jurisdiction we must abide, we bravely pioneer the slender trail of obedience, regardless of what it may cost us. We are called to obey, regardless of how we feel, what we think, or what others do not do. Like Jesus, we must choose to please Heaven as our custom, knowing that we prove our love by following His instruction. We must move from the attitude of “have to” and embrace “want to” if we are going to fulfill the call on our lives.

Father, You told me what is good and what You require. I continue on the path of obedience regardless of the cost. I do right, I love mercy, and I walk humbly with You.

The Cultivation Of One’s Character Is Determined By The Meditation Of One’s Heart

“Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer.”
Psalms 19:14 (NKJV)

APRIL 27 - Our hearts unconsciously affect everything we do. There is no greater understanding a believer must grasp than the unmatched power of a pure heart. Jesus tells us that “the pure in heart shall see God.” He didn’t say the rich; He didn’t say the wise; He didn’t even say those with great faith. Jesus said, “The pure in heart shall see God.” The apostle John tells us, “If you say you abide in Him then you ought to walk as He did.” Jesus is our example of true Godly character. Character is not something we can build independent of God; it is a result of God’s Spirit coming alive in us. His Spirit demands that we do what is right.

Cultivation of true character is dependent upon our willingness to surrender our hearts to God. Because of the clarity of their hearts and right motivation, Moshe Dayan and his 42 co-prisoners had their prison sentences cut short as they were fatefully called upon to help the Allies fight the Vichy French, who were in control of Syria during World War II. Leading a group of commando-scouts, Dayan and his men set up a successful Australian invasion in the Syrian terrain. Their pliable hearts towards doing right affected everything they did.

The main issue lies not in the ability to be disciplined, but rather in the pliability of our hearts. David said, “Lord, I hide Your Word in my heart that I might not sin against You.” As we fill our hearts with the Word of God, we soon see the character of Christ manifest in our lives.

Daily Confession

Father, I thank You that I guard my heart above everything else. I see the importance of a pure heart, knowing it affects everything I do.

Understanding Is The Reward Awaiting Those Who Meditate On God’s Word

“I have more understanding than all my teachers,
for Your testimonies are my meditation.”

Psalm 119:99 (NKJV)

APRIL 15 - Just as the correct numbers release the combination to the bank vault’s safe, understanding unlocks the very life of God. Understanding is the ability to see life as God sees it. Very few people ever draw close to walking in the fullness of what God has for them because they lack understanding. Without it, one cannot fully embrace the truth of God’s Word. We see throughout all of Scripture the worthy emphasis placed on meditation of the words of God.

During the era of great prophets such as Ezra and Nehemiah, Hebrew teachers were advised to not only teach their given subjects, but to closely ponder (or meditate upon) the temperaments of the various
students they instructed. These teachers were further exhorted to not just read words to their pupils, but to have an understanding, a thorough insight into the spirits and souls of what was happening inside each boy and girl. It is the same with many individuals who routinely read and study the Bible, yet they are not changed by the information they read.

Although the Bible contains the words of God, it only becomes real when we choose to meditate upon it. This does not refer to a type of eastern religious practice; this refers to one’s daily hearing, pondering, and confession of the Scripture. If we take just one Scripture, run it through our minds, and put it in our mouths, it will come alive inside, producing more change than reading the entire New Testament would. And just as the ancient Hebrew teachers were instructed to meditate upon their students for success in the classroom,
scripture meditation is vital to your success as a believer.

Daily Confession

Father, I thank You that as I meditate upon Your Word, understanding rises within me.

The Transformation Of One’s Life Is In Direct Proportion To The Alteration Of One’s Mind

“Do not copy the behavior and customs of this world,
but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.”

Romans 12:2 (NLT)

FEBRUARY 6TH - One of my passions in life is to see others on a continual upward swing of transformation. It hurts me to see people in church hear the Word for many years on end and be no different from the day they stepped foot through the church doors. God did not design life for stagnation. Nothing living stagnates; it continually transforms from season to season or ultimately dies.

Shouldn’t we be the same? If you cannot look back on your life six months ago, or even one year ago, and see any growth, you should examine yourself as to why there hasn’t been any progress. We are to go from glory to glory.

One of the reasons God birthed the message of excellence into my heart is because excellence causes a person to pursue change. Jesus does not allow an individual to stay the same, just as He doesn’t allow the landscape to languish. I have heard it said like this, “God loves you just the way you are, but He wants you to be like Jesus.” Isn’t it interesting that when God welcomed you into His family, He said, “Now you must die and Christ must live through you.” It is not that God doesn’t love us. Remember, transformation of your life is in direct proportion to the alteration of your mind.

Daily Confession

Father, I thank You that my mind is continually renewed by Your Word. I desire
transformation, and I understand that transformation only comes through mind
alteration. I choose to alter my mind in accordance with Your Word.
