Promotion Stems From Actions, While Frustration Comes As The Result Of Intentions

“But if you keep looking steadily into God’s perfect law—the law that sets you free—and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it.”
James 1:25 (NLT)

JUNE 8 - The Jews intended to believe in the Messiah. They also intended to follow God with all their hearts, intending to learn the Scriptures and the prophecies therein. But obviously, many of them failed to do so
since they crucified the very same Messiah that was eagerly awaited for so many generations. Their intentions faltered—big time!

The blessing of God comes to the person who follows through with his intentions. While we may think our good intentions should bring us promotion, it’s only when there is real progress that we can expect promotion in life. Dormant intentions only serve as a source of frustration.

We must avoid the temptation to believe that we are being cheated or treated unfairly when we don’t receive promotion, even though we have such grandiose intentions. So, where do we begin?

  • First, let us admit that we have ample room to grow in this area.
  • Second, let us determine which of our good intentions deserve our concentrated attention.
  • Third, let us pull out all the stops and go after a solid performance, measuring our success by our actions, and no longer by our mere intentions.

Daily Confession

Father, I thank You that I look steadily into Your perfect law, the law that sets me free. Help me to always be a doer of Your Word, and I know that I am blessed because of it.

Obedience Begins With Your Heart Long Before It Ever Reaches Your Feet

“And I will give you a new heart with new and right desires, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony heart of sin and give you a new, obedient heart.”
Ezekiel 36:26 (NLT)

MARCH 8 - Obeying the dietary needs given in God’s Word, the Jews served a number of beans and peas, necessary for protein and nourishment. Petrified beans have even been discovered in recent excavations.
Without proper obedience, those ancient Jews would have walked around undernourished and frail.

Jesus told the story of two boys who were given an instruction. One said he would do it, but he never did. The other said he wouldn’t do what he was asked, but shortly afterward, he felt conviction in his heart and completed the instruction. Even though this boy denied the instruction with his lips, his sense of obedience permeated all the way to his heart. From there, he went to work, and no doubt afterward returned to his father to tell him he obeyed.

I believe very strongly in voicing our desire to obey, but I believe even more strongly in putting our obedience into action. If you are a believer, you have a new heart that really desires to obey. But sometimes,
heartfelt obedience is imprisoned by pride, bitterness, and offense. We must go to battle to rescue the obedient heart God gave us. Then, we can get to work with our instructions, both from men and from Heaven. And last, we can declare, “I obeyed.”

Daily Confession

Father, I thank You that You took out my old, stony heart of sin and gave me a new, obedient heart in its place. I follow through with every instruction I’m given, both from You and from delegated authority.

The Motives Of Your Heart Are Revealed The Moment Your Intentions And Actions Converge

“Why are you so polite with Me, always saying ‘Yes, Sir,’ and ‘That’s right, Sir,’ but never doing a thing I tell you? These words I speak to you are not mere additions to your life, homeowner improvements to your standard of living. They are foundation works, words to build a life on.”
Luke 6:46-47 (Message)

JANUARY 26 - William Pryor Letchworth was a New York conservationist, historian, and philanthropist. Upon observing the way orphans and the mentally ill were treated in our nation’s facilities, Letchworth traveled to Europe to study the ways in which the mentally ill could be humanely treated, transforming antiquated practices throughout the entire region. Mr. Letchworth devotedly took under his wing scores of orphaned young men, taking them to his country estate to escape the crime and soot of the big city. Called the “man who always did right,” the pure motives of Letchworth’s heart were blatantly revealed.

Jesus does not look for those who merely talk about obedience; He looks for those who truly obey. The moment we have an opportunity to do what God has tells us is when we either find a heart that longs after God or one still enslaved to the desires of the flesh.

God called us to produce and bear fruit. Jesus told us, “By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.” The moment we have an opportunity to do what God told us to do, is the moment we either find a heart longing after God, or one still enslaved to the desires of the flesh. Wouldn’t you, like Mr. Letchworth, also like to be called a man or woman who “always did right?” If so, then choose today to become a person who not only intends to do what is written, but who actually completes it.

Daily Confession

Father, I thank You that I glorify You by bearing fruit doing what You ask of me. My faith and good works will be a witness to many.
