The Greatest Responsibility Placed Upon Any Man Is Adherance To The Word Of God

“Here is my final conclusion: fear God and obey His commands, for this is the duty of every person.”
Ecclesiastes 12:13 (NLT)

AUGUST 22 - In a southern California city is a glamorous movie theatre whose towering spotlight flickers and floats across the desert sky, drawing people to their nightly showings. That spotlight is proof something is going on. Our unwavering obedience and positive attitude draw Heaven’s spotlight—proof that something exciting is going on—not in some old movie theatre, but inside the hearts of His people! The Bible never says, “If you love Me, you will eat the best of the land.” It says, “If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the best of the land.” Our obedience is the only proof that we trust God. The success of our life by Heaven’s standard depends on our obedience to the written Word of God. The more accurately we obey, the greater the rewards.
Picture this: a mother asks her son to take care of the dishes while she is out. She comes home to find a beautiful bouquet of flowers, a sweet “I Love You” card, and a sink full of dirty dishes. Is she to believe her son loves her because of the flowers and card? Perhaps, if he did the dishes, but his disobedience to her specific instruction speaks louder than the sacrifice he went through to buy the flowers and the card. Obedience is better than sacrifice.

Solomon had everything, yet in Ecclesiastes 12:13 he came to one conclusion: fear God and obey His commands. Obedience to the Word of God is the one responsibility for which every man has to give an account on the Day of Judgment. God places such a high emphasis on obedience because our actions prove exactly who we are.

Father, I thank You that I fear You and keep Your Word. I prove my trust in You and my love for You by doing what You ask of me.

You Must Never Neglect Your Present Responsibilities While Attending To Your Future Aspirations

“His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.”
Matthew 25:21 (KJV)

JULY 18 - Something was happening in early, nineteenth-century England— a drastic change for the better! Following various revivals, Englishmen began to depend less and less on superstitious charms and astrology to make their crops grow, instead, they put more and more faith into God’s principles. These men accepted responsibility by seeking ways to use their land in the most efficient manner possible, going far beyond their ancient traditions.

All growth requirements change. God expects change of us, just as a parent of his child. Like those English farmers, we must reach for more, pushing beyond what we have always done. The challenge we face, though, is maintaining our same level of excellence in our current responsibilities, as we boldly step into new ones. Even if we could do a great job at the next level of life, we will never have the freedom to enter that place if we neglect the duties of our present assignment.

This pitfall is very dangerous, and is often very well disguised. It is so tempting to imagine all the bliss of something new. And then, just as we are about ready to lay hold of that new thing, the ground beneath our feet falls out from under us like a jagged land fault, solely because we did not complete the very thing for which we were responsible. Let us, therefore, strive for growth while we flawlessly carry out the tasks we
were asked to complete.

Father, I thank You that You are faithful. I fulfill all my current responsibilities as if I were doing them for You, and I trust that You make my future dreams a reality!

Never Attempt To Take Authority Over Something For Which You Are Not Responsible

“Jesus replied, ‘If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You follow Me.’”
John 21:22 (NLT)

JUNE 23 - King over Judea at the Savior’s birth, Herod attempted to use his authority by quizzing the Wise Men concerning the Child’s whereabouts by craftily asking for information upon their return via Jerusalem. Nonetheless, God intervened, warning them not to meet Herod at the palace, but to travel to their country another way, halting Herod’s plan to do business outside of God’s desires. Deviously, and with great pride, Herod took responsibility over that which did not concern him.

The journey of promotion is abruptly halted when this principle is violated. It often shows a superior that the current responsibilities are not enough for the employee. Rather than fulfilling his or her own duties with excellence, the employee decides to spend his or her time in someone else’s business.

Let’s look at another Biblical example. The moment Peter stepped outside of his responsibility, Jesus quickly rebuked him. We see how seriously the Lord takes this issue. It wasn’t that Jesus tried to keep something good from Peter by not telling him about John; Jesus tried to lead Peter on a path that would be best for him. Jesus understood that getting involved in someone else’s business is self-sabotage! Peter had to focus 100% on his responsibility, which meant that he could put no thought into what another person had to do.

Daily Confession

Father, I thank You that I mind my own business, and that I do the things I am commanded to do. I refuse to compare myself with those around me, knowing that I do everything as unto You.

Blaming Others Is Proof You Have Not Yet Accepted Responsibility

“‘Yes,’ Adam admitted, ‘but it was the woman You gave me who brought me the fruit, and I ate it.’ Then the Lord God asked the woman, ‘How could you do such a thing?’ ‘The serpent tricked me,’ she replied. ‘That’s why I ate it.’”
Genesis 3:12-13 (NLT)

FEBRUARY 24 - Enclosed in glass, the illustrious sign stated, “The Buck Stops Here.” Many of you are no doubt aware that plaque sat humbly on President Harry S. Truman’s desk in the White House. The motto boldly implies that I alone take sole responsibility for my life, refusing to blame anyone, or anything, for my present state of being.

The Israelite kings held several crucial responsibilities: commander of the army, supreme judge, absolute master, and imposer of taxes. Some kings blamed others for their rebellion, as in the case of Israel’s first king, Saul. King David accepted complete responsibility for his sin, becoming one of the greatest kings ever.

Nevertheless, it all began in the garden; a victim mentality ruthlessly befell humanity. To this day, that mentality afflicts mankind. People believe they are not accountable for their own failure. They blame dysfunctional parents, overwhelming circumstances, insensitive teachers, and anyone else who had a particular role in their life. This conveniently removes the guilt of unfulfilled responsibilities from them.

Winning in life is not hard. Doing it God’s way may take longer than we prefer, but it is the safest route. God gave men the power to choose their thoughts. Therefore, we cannot fail without our consent, and we cannot succeed without our participation. We must use the seed in our own hand. Success is not an accident, but neither is failure. Follow the example of King David and stop blaming others. Make the decision today by saying, “The Buck Stops Here.”

Daily Confession
