Promotion Is Never Awarded By Performing Tasks You Are Already Paid To Do

“And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two.”
Matthew 5:41 (NKJV)

JANUARY 31 - Having been so infuriated by his people being forever pushed around by foreign thugs, a Hebrew priest named Mattathias finally decided to go beyond limitations. Walking up to the city’s Greek altar, Mattathias smashed it into pieces, starting a twenty-four year conflict. After winning Jerusalem, the first thing they did was toss away every object of Greek idolatry from the temple, and gave back the holy site to God’s people. This victory is known today as the Feast of Hanukkah.

You must do more than what is expected of you. You may think you are busy, but you must realize that everyone is busy, not just you. There are never-ending opportunities available to a person who is willing to go beyond the confines of their Positions Results Description. Taking on extra work by your own initiative shows your superiors that you are determined to succeed. Chances are your company aspires to expand. If you can add fuel to that fire, in time, you will be rewarded.

We all have things that are required of us: work duties, domestic chores, legal obligations, social expectations, and spiritual requirements. Many people stop and never discover what it means to be pleasing. You cannot please your employer by doing only what he pays you to do. You only bring pleasure by doing more than your salary requires. Our promotion in life cannot come by simply fulfilling our current requirements. The pure, refreshing water of promotion only flows when we discover what is desired of us. Mattathias went above and beyond his priestly duties. It takes concentrated effort, but the reward is well worth going the “extra mile.”

Daily Confession

Father, I thank You that I go above and beyond what is required of me.
I chose to do everything as if I were doing it for You.

Shattered Dreams - Book

If you’re like most people, you have several unfulfilled dreams lying dusty and neglected in some forgotten corner of your life. Some of those dreams may even seem shattered beyond hope or repair. Perhaps your dreams were crushed by an unexpected crisis or the negative words of people close to you. Or maybe you’ve just let the everyday obstacles and challenges of life discourage you to the point of giving up — and now, you feel more like a victim than a victor.

No matter what “dream-destroyer” has shoved your dreams to the sidelines, author Robb Thompson wants to help you see those dreams restored and realized at last. In his book, Shattered Dreams, Dr. Thompson presents scriptural guidelines that, if followed, will catapult your dreams out of that dusty, forgotten corner of neglect and into the spotlight of fulfillment and success.

Dr. Thompson’s message is clear: Nothing or no one (except you) can keep you from living the life of greatness in God about which you’ve always dreamed. Are you ready to dust off your dreams? You are well able to overcome the “dream-destroyers!”

An Abused Life Is Simply A Life Without Purpose

“Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where they can be eaten by moths and get rusty, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in Heaven, where they will never become moth-eaten or rusty and where they will be safe from thieves. Wherever your treasure is, there your heart and  thoughts will also be.”
Matthew 6:19-21 (NLT)

JANUARY 30 - Did your mother ever fragrance the family’s closets with handfuls of those slippery, tiny white spheres called mothballs? If she did, that unforgettable odor will probably stay with you for the rest of your life, an aromatic reminder that things down here can be easily “eaten up.” Moths and rust are simple facts of life – telltale hazards of placing all our valuables within this dying world.

The person to whom Jesus refers in Matthew 6 is the one who lives without a purpose. Perhaps their life is filled with a great number of temporary things, but they accomplish zilch when it comes to an eternal return. Since everything around us is one day going to vanish, how foolish it is to live just for the here-and-now. We could call that “life abuse.”

We have a choice to make the very second our eyes converge upon the next sunrise. Either we can use the day to make something out of the life God has so graciously given us, or we can squander our hours on fleeting pleasures and self-centered aimlessness, our time rusting away like the body of an old, discarded automobile. God’s grace is available to all who come to Him, offering themselves as living sacrifices. That needs to be our initial step. And as God has the final authority in our life, we do whatever we must to make sure that our life is used to the fullest, for our good, and for the good of the people around us. We will live our life, on purpose.

Father, I thank You for giving me the gift of life. I thank You for giving me
the grace I need to make each day worthwhile and full of purpose.

Disrespect Is The Thief Who Has Been Stealing Your Promotions

“… ‘So if it please the king, we suggest that you issue a written decree,
a law of the Persians and Medes that cannot be revoked. It should order
that Queen Vashti be forever banished from your presence and that
you choose another queen more worthy than she.”

Esther 1:19 (NLT)

JANUARY 29 - The topaz is stunning, one of the most precious of earthly gems. Extremely hard, topaz is also very brittle, splitting and cracking away in seconds. Though stunningly beautiful, Vashti must have been quite a lady! After refusing an instruction from her husband, the king, the most powerful man in all of Babylon, her flagrant disrespect caused her to become as topaz: hard and brittle. There was no way the king could overlook her disrespect and successfully continue his rule.

Think of it—for the rest of Vashti’s life, she would be known as the queen who refused to honor the King. Her life was ruined, having split and cracked away within seconds. Now she could never step into the promotion that was once so easily within her grasp.

We may do everything right on our jobs, in our marriages, and in our homes, but one moment of disrespect can set us back for years. Mistakes can be overlooked. Poor performance can be improved. But disrespect leaves a sour taste in the mouth, making it exceptionally difficult to forget. Have you grown too familiar with someone? Have you crossed boundaries? Think about these questions and determine to never let disrespect become a thief, getting the best of you, as it did Queen Vashti.

others what I want them to do to me.

Until There Is Heartfelt Restitution There Is No True Repentance

“For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death.”
2 Corinthians 7:10 (NKJV)

JANUARY 28 - The horrific plight of African-American slaves, the disaster of Native American land treaties, and the degrading internment of Japanese American families all have one thing in common—the valid need of restitution. Whenever we do wrong, guilt remains until there is a wholehearted attempt at restitution. Guilt doesn’t depart when the people we have wronged leave; it stays until we humble ourselves to make restitution.

Repentance without restitution is nothing more than a futile exercise in smooth talk, words with no backbone. We may try to squirm our way out of the responsibility of restitution by saying, “But I repented for what I did. That person just has not forgiven me.” Nevertheless, there must be some type of restorative process to prove to the person we wronged that Godly sorrow for our sin struck us so deeply that we now are willing to make those changes stick forever.

If we truly repent for what we did, there should be no problem whatsoever going to the person we wronged (every day if necessary), letting them know how much we need their love and acceptance. If we do this, God guarantees our release from guilt and shame.

Daily Confession

Father, I thank You for creating in me a clean heart and renewing a steadfast spirit within me. I choose to bring restitution to every area of my life where I have been wrong.

Whenever You Solve Greater Problems You Will Receive Greater Rewards

“The master said, ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant.
You have been faithful in handling this small amount, so now
I will give you many more responsibilities.’”

Matthew 25:23 (NLT)

JANUARY 27 - It is nine a.m. on Monday morning and the telephones are already buzzing. Clients file in and out of this bustling partnership as if it were the local supermarket, and more communicate through written correspondence and email. On the second floor of this lucrative law firm, a secretary earns $12.00 an hour processing all sorts of legal documents, setting them up by using a certain brand of computer machinery. An attorney in the same office earns $300.00 an hour, arguing in court over a new patent, a rapacious improvement of that same series of high-tech office equipment. Why this seemingly unfair discrepancy? It’s not that the attorney is nicer, better looking, or even smarter than the secretary, or that he is somehow a superior person. It is just that the attorney chooses to solve a greater problem. There’s no doubt about it — the type of problem a person solves for others determines the manner of reward they receive.

In our culture, it is common to expect a raise each year, just like we anticipate Thanksgiving in November, Christmas in December, and New Year’s Day in January. But if an employee truly desires a raise, an employer has the right to ask, “What new kinds of problems are you going to solve for me that warrant more money than you make right now?” As a believer, you must have a ready answer, showing that you are willing to become tangibly more valuable to your employer before you expect a promotion.

Daily Confession

Father, I thank You that I am faithful over little, and You cause me to be faithful over much, and I thank You that You open my eyes to see the great problems I can solve for those above me.

The Motives Of Your Heart Are Revealed The Moment Your Intentions And Actions Converge

“Why are you so polite with Me, always saying ‘Yes, Sir,’ and ‘That’s right, Sir,’ but never doing a thing I tell you? These words I speak to you are not mere additions to your life, homeowner improvements to your standard of living. They are foundation works, words to build a life on.”
Luke 6:46-47 (Message)

JANUARY 26 - William Pryor Letchworth was a New York conservationist, historian, and philanthropist. Upon observing the way orphans and the mentally ill were treated in our nation’s facilities, Letchworth traveled to Europe to study the ways in which the mentally ill could be humanely treated, transforming antiquated practices throughout the entire region. Mr. Letchworth devotedly took under his wing scores of orphaned young men, taking them to his country estate to escape the crime and soot of the big city. Called the “man who always did right,” the pure motives of Letchworth’s heart were blatantly revealed.

Jesus does not look for those who merely talk about obedience; He looks for those who truly obey. The moment we have an opportunity to do what God has tells us is when we either find a heart that longs after God or one still enslaved to the desires of the flesh.

God called us to produce and bear fruit. Jesus told us, “By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.” The moment we have an opportunity to do what God told us to do, is the moment we either find a heart longing after God, or one still enslaved to the desires of the flesh. Wouldn’t you, like Mr. Letchworth, also like to be called a man or woman who “always did right?” If so, then choose today to become a person who not only intends to do what is written, but who actually completes it.

Father, I thank You that I glorify You by bearing fruit doing what You ask of me. My faith and good works will be a witness to many.

Obedience Is The Key That Opens The Door For Heaven’s Direction

“Now the Lord had said to Abram: ‘Get out of your country, from your family and from your father’s house, to a land that I will show you’ …so Abram departed as the Lord had spoken to him, and Lot went with him.”
Genesis 12:1, 4 (NKJV)

JANUARY 25 - Psalm 37:23 tells us, “The steps of the Godly are directed by the Lord, for He delights in every detail of their lives.” When a young child takes his first steps, unexpected things happen—misshapen movements, irregular strides, and hard falls. But as this same child listens to tender, reassuring parental instruction, he gets back up. Almost every parent loves to cheer on their child as they take those initial steps.

God does not and cannot direct the steps of everyone; only those who choose to comply, those who listen with ready ears to His instructions. We see a man in Genesis who chose to comply with the voice of God. God commanded Abram to travel to a place about which he knew nothing. Abram’s response was immediate, unparalleled obedience. Because of Abram’s readiness to act, God was able to direct his steps. Not every path the Lord leads you on is freshly paved, bordered with colorful flowers, and totally detour free—actually, quite the opposite is true. Nevertheless, God’s paths consistently lead you to an abundant harvest.

Remember, Heaven can only direct the steps of the individual who is willing to act upon God’s Word, but we must choose to immediately obey His promptings. As we quickly comply to Heaven’s orders by taking those first steps of obedience with the innocence of a young child, we experience God’s mighty hand of precise direction, abundant provision, and steadfast protection.

Daily Confession

Father, I thank You for directing my steps so that no sin comes upon my life. Thank You that You delight in every detail of my life. I act upon Your Word, knowing that Your mighty hand directs me.

Progress Is Haulted The Moment You Open The Door To Wrong Decisions

“He who walks with wise men will be wise,
but the companion of fools will be destroyed.”

Proverbs 13:20 (NKJV)

JANUARY 24 - Have you ever stopped to consider how lightning is made? The negatively charged water of a thundercloud fatefully meets positively charged atoms in the air, forming a path between the cloud and the ground. Billions of negative charges rush down this path, meeting positive upward charges that potently heat the air, resulting in the superheated glow called lightning. When lightning occurs, it may be fascinating, but unfortunately, it is often fatal.

In the same way, we are exactly like those with whom we associate. There are no greater limitations placed upon an individual than those brought about by negative relationships. When God wants to bless you, He sends a person into your life. When Satan wants to destroy you, he too sends a person into your life.  therefore, it is vital to have guidelines to enter into relationship with others. Not everyone is called to be our friend. If there are specific qualifications to enter into relationship with Jesus, shouldn’t we hold the same requirements for our relationships with people?

To have positive relations with others, we must become the person we want to attract. If we attract the disrespectful and those who negatively walk in sin, we must take a closer look at ourselves and see what we need to change. Become principally based; stand mightily for principle and keep yourself safe from those the enemy sends. The moment others begin to walk by the same principles is when they walk with us. Two are better than one (two positives that is), for two have a greater reward for their labor than just one.

Daily Confession

Father, I thank You that I walk with wise men, and so I will be wise.
I progress in life because I choose to spend my time with those who pursue You.

Words Are The Catalyst That Ignite The Fires Of Tomorrow

“Likewise, look at the ships: though they are so great and are driven by
rough winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever
the impulse of the helmsman determines.”

James 3:4 (AMP)

JANUARY 23 - In the 1850’s, no European had ever set foot in the heart of Africa. Though mauled by a lion, separated from his family, and deserted by native helpers, Dr. David Livingstone faithfully spoke these words: “I shall open up a path into the interior or perish.” As a result of his resolute words and corresponding actions, Africa was fully opened to the gospel of Christ.

These Scriptures in James clearly reveal the invincible power of the tongue. Although the tongue may appear minuscule, it ultimately controls the actions of the entire body. James compares the tongue to a horse’s bit (James 3:3); the one who controls that small bit has complete jurisdiction over the whole horse. James also uses a ship’s rudder as an example; a rudder is usually very small in comparison to the ship, but when the captain turns that rudder, the huge ship turns along with it.

Just as the rudder controls the destination of a ship, the tongue is the rudder of our lives. No matter how big life’s problems appear, we must use our mouths to guide and steer us in the direction God desires. It takes time to direct a huge ship; it also takes time for our transformation. Circumstances don’t change instantaneously. By continuing to confess His Word and keep the rudder turned, in due time our lives line up with what we say. As did the great Dr. Livingstone, let’s confess what we want to happen in the future  instead of moaning about what we see today.

Daily Confession

Father, I thank You that I speak Your Word and I believe in my heart without

You Must Choose Today How You Will Respond Tomorrow

“…choose today whom you will serve.”
Joshua 24:15 (NLT)

JANUARY 22 - Perhaps the most documented missionary of the 19th century was David Livingstone, born into a poor, yet devout, Scottish family. Though he deeply yearned for an education, David was sent to work
in a cotton mill at age 10. Instead of self-pity, with his first wages, David made the right choice to purchase a book of Latin grammar, thereby beginning his sought-after schooling on his own. Eventually able to study theology and medicine, he subsequently served God in Africa for 30 years. If you haven’t noticed already, life doesn’t always deal us the hand we want. I have three important questions to ask:

  • How will you respond to tomorrow’s setbacks?
  • How will you respond to an adverse situation on the job?
  • How will you respond to your spouse’s poor attitude?

You’re bound to make a bad decision if you wait until the situation arises. Poor decisions are made as a result of inordinate pressure in our lives. For example, you must make a decision tonight to pray tomorrow
morning. If you wait until you feel like it, you may never get around to actually doing it. Why allow your flesh to keep you from making the right decisions? Choose today how you will respond tomorrow. Follow the example of Dr. Livingstone by never permitting the pressures of life to dictate how you respond. Commit yourself to God’s Word and make the choice to obey it, regardless of the cost or situation.

Daily Confession

Father, I thank You that today is the day I choose life and blessings.
I thank You for giving me the wisdom and discipline in my decision making process. I make the right choices today that guarantee a great future.
